A number of business agreements have been signed on Monday, between Colonel Muammar Gaddafi and his host, the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy. Libyan leader Col Gaddafi started a five-day visit on Monday. Four years ago, he decided to end the diplomatic’s isolation. France is the first Western country to welcome him.
President Sarkozy said the contracts would be worth 10 billions euros. It was confirmed, after a signing ceremony, that Libyan compagnies had agreed to buy 21 Airbus planes. The French president office also announced that a co-operation accord had been signed to develop the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and the supply of a nuclear reactors to desalinate sea water.
But the French president is facing domestic criticism about this visit. Even on his camp, some people say that Col Gaddafi can’t be welcome in the human rights country while in Libya, he doesn’t respect them.
The French minister of human rights, Rama Yade, wasn’t in favour of this visit… then she’s been called to order by the president’s office, and she became unnoticeable ! Others justify this visit by saying that Libya made progress on the human rights matter.
Yesterday French television interviewed Colonel Gaddafi. He told the journalist that Mr Sarkozy and him had never mentioned at all human rights in Libya. On the other side president Sarkozy assured he told Col Gaddafi to pursue his progress on that issue.
