The West Bank town of Nablus has been raided on Monday by Israeli troops, who shut down three facilities of a Hamas-affiliated charity and a medical centre, Palestinians say.

The raid targeted al-Tadamon (Solidarity) charity, and appears to have been part of an intensified crackdown on Hamas in the West Bank, by Israel and the Palestinian Authority. (more…)

World leaders are meeting in Tokyako, on the island of Hokkaido (photo), Japan, for a summit of the Group of Eight. In an effort to tackle global warming, they have agreed to set a global target of cutting carbon emissions by at least 50% by 2050.

The deal has been announced after all-night negotiations by Yasuo Fukuda, Japan’s prime minister. (more…)

For the first time, Nuri al-Maliki (photo, from topnews.in), Iraq’s prime minister has publicly called for a US troop withdrawal timetable.

A UN-mediated prisoner exchange deal has been signed by Israel and Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia movement.

On Monday, the office of Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, and a Lebanese political source said a date for the swap will be settled this week. (more…)
