A 15-year-old boy has been killed by the police in the southern Australian city of Melbourne, in a skate park after officers said he threatened them with knives.
The boy’s identity has not been released.
According to the police, he continued to approach them Thursday night, even after they fired warning shots and twice hit him with pepper spray. Then several officers fired at him, hitting him in the chest. He died at the scene.
Less than a week ago, police in Athens, Greece, fatally shot a 15-year-old boy, which sparked massive riots.
In Melbourne, police were called to the park after several people reported seeing a young man behaving erratically, said Tim Cartwright, Victoria state police Assistant Commissioner.
He added that the teen had stolen knives from a nearby department store earlier in the day.
“He was irrational. He was yelling and screaming and, as far as we can tell, armed with two knives at that stage”, Mr Cartwright told reporters.
Mr Cartwright also indicated that though the situation was a tragedy, police acted appropriately.
The shooting will be investigated by homicide detectives on behalf of the state coroner, under the supervision of the police’s ethical standards unit, said Mr Cartwright.
