A key figure in the founding of militant group Hezbollah has died aged 74, hospital sources have said.

Lebanon’s leading Shia Muslim cleric, Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah (photo, from bbcimg.co.uk) was regarded as Hezbollah’s spiritual guide after the group was founded in 1982. (more…)

A Hezbollah fighter shot down a Lebanese army helicopter last week, said the movement leader, Hassan Nasrallah, adding that the shooting was a mistake. The Hezbollah fighter opened fire after being taken by surprise, when the aircraft landed nearby. (more…)

After at least six people have been killed in bloody sectarian clashes in the streets of the northern port Tripoly, Lebanese tanks have been sent there. Soldiers took position on Saturday, between the predominantly Sunni Bab al-Tebbaneh district the neighbouring largely Alawite area of Jabal Mohsen. (more…)

While Lebanon is celebrating the return of the prisoners as part of an exchange, Israel is holding military funerals for Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, two soldiers returned (photo, from boston.com) from Lebanon by the Hezbollah movement.

The Israeli soldiers are believed to have died in 2006, when they were ambushed. Their capture started the 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon. (more…)

The final go-ahead has been given by Israel’s cabinet, to a prisoner swap with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, though Ehud Olmert (photo, from rfi.fr), Israeli prime minister, said that the Shia group had not fully kept its side of the bargain.

The stage of the exchance has been set on Tuesday, by the cabinet’s decision. It is expected to take place during the following day. (more…)

Seven weeks after an agreement brokered by Qatar brought the coutry back from the brink of civil war, Lebanon has announced a new 30-members national unity government.

After a meeting with Lebanon’s president, Michel Sleiman, in Beirut on Friday, Fouad Siniora (photo, from time.com), reinstated as the country’s prime minister, announced the new cabinet. (more…)
