The foreign press has been called by Hu Jintao (photo), China’s president, to abide by Chinese laws, after a breach of security by a South Korean journalist, who managed to tape rehearsals of the opening ceremony this week.

On Friday, just a week before the opening of the Olympic games, Mr Jintao said that “China’s door will always be open, during and after the Olympics. We welcome foreign journalists and will facilitate them in the future”. (more…)

While covering the Beijing Olympic Games, journalists will be accomodated in a high-tech facility (photo, from bbc.co.uk), where they will not have completely uncensored access to the internet, said Chinese and Olympic officials, as sites related to spiritual group Falun Gong would be blocked.

But journalists also found that they could not see some news of human rights websites. (more…)

Trying to improve the Chinese capital’s air quality in time for the Olympic Games, restrictions on driving have been introduced in Beijing (photo, from abc.net.au). Coming into effect on Sunday, 19 days before the sporting event begins, the directive bans private vehicles with odd, and even, numbered licence plates from Beijing’s roads on alternate days.
